New football pitches, tennis courts and a skate park will be built as part of a major regeneration of a local sports hub.

The new site will be built at the Miners' Welfare Ground and Charlie Wayman Fields in Chilton, County Durham.

Plans for the multi-use sports facility, including a new clubhouse, were submitted by the town council in partnership with Chilton Miners' Welfare Charity.

The regeneration, approved by Durham County Council, will also see existing facilities across the two sites upgraded and extended.

Charlie Wayman Fields have been beset by flooding and drainage issues for several years, causing Chilton Juniors FC matches to frequently be postponed or relocated.

Work is already under way to improve the site for future use, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

A new football clubhouse and changing facilities will be built at the site, with plans for the community hub to include a kitchen and showers.

There will also be permanent floodlighting and a new 5×5 3G football pitch.

The pavilion at the Miners' Welfare Ground will be refurbished to improve changing facilities for visiting teams.

A third tennis court will also be built and the skate park relocated.

A statement from the applicant reads: "The proposals constitute an enhancement to the existing facilities, providing additional and better quality sports and recreation facilities for all of the local community and this should be supported."

Work is expected to start on the site in due course.
