A community garden in Bradford will receive more than £230,000 towards the maintenance of the facility.

The government said the funding would "secure the future" of Wibsey Community Gardens and "go towards the renovating of this precious outdoor space to ensure it's fit for purpose for future generations".

It is part of a national £36m of funding for community projects under government plans to improve economic growth and raise living standards.

Jen White, who runs Wibsey Community Gardens, said she was "absolutely thrilled" to be able to renovate the centre.

"It has been a really hard push to get capital funding for our site," she said.

"We've got a brilliant team and we've worked really hard to make it happen."

'Vital support'

The site at Wibsey Park grows fresh fruit, salad and herbs, and includes activities for vulnerable adults and young people.

Funds will go towards the general upkeep of the site, including improving the on-site toilets.

Ms White said: "We always struggle for capital funding.

"We've been running the gardens since 2017 and leased it from the council since 2020.

"And it's really hard, particularly in this climate, to find funding anywhere.

"It's such a fabulous Christmas gift."

Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner said: "We are delivering on our plan for change by saving these vital community assets to provide important opportunities for working people and their families.

"These projects represent what is so special about communities across the UK – bringing people of all ages together, providing vital support and giving them a sense of purpose and belonging."

Other projects in Yorkshire receiving funding include Shantona Women and Family Services in Harehills, Leeds, and Todmorden Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society.
