A man has been arrested on suspicion of rape after reports of a serious sexual assault.

Police said a young woman was attacked in Victoria Park, off Bath Street in Sneinton, Nottingham, at about 03:00 GMT on Saturday 21 December.

A 19-year-old man was arrested on Friday evening and remains in custody, said Nottinghamshire Police.

Officers said even though there had been an arrest, it was an ongoing investigation and encouraged anyone with any information who might be able to help to contact them.

Det Insp Nicole Milner, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "The victim has been informed of this development and continues to be supported by specially-trained officers.

"We understand the concern this incident has caused in the local community. I want to reassure people that we treat reports of this nature extremely seriously."
