A busy Leicestershire street is set to be closed for much of the next three weeks for repairs to the sewer system.

Latimer Street in Anstey will be shut between 08:00 and 16:00 GMT each day for major emergency work.

Severn Trent Water said it had tried to clear a blockage but this had proved unsuccessful, so an entirely new section of pipe had to be installed.

The county council said users of the road, which contains dozens of houses and a school, would face delays in accessing the area.

One resident said the area would be a 'nightmare' when the school holidays ended

Before Christmas, Severn Trent wrote to residents and organisations in the area to explain that a "third party concrete blockage" meant the sewer was no longer working.

It confirmed tankers were being used to remove waster water and prevent properties being flooded.

Resident David Adams said they had already been struggling with losing parking spaces to house building and the tankers.

"Now we have Severn Trent digging the road up for three weeks to try and solve the problem so now we have lost the remaining parking which means there is NO on street parking for the residents who have to pay £50 a year for a permit that presently has no value.

"It's going to be a traffic nightmare when the school reopens on Wednesday."

Confirming a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order, the county council said: "Once works are completed, the road will reopen, this is not expected to exceed 21 days.

"During the closure times there will be restricted access [and] road users may have to wait whilst access is made.

"There will also be rolling parking restrictions."
