Two people have died in separate house fires in south Wales overnight.

A 37-year-old man died in an "extremely challenging" blaze at a house on Penydarren, Merthyr Tydfil, on Wednesday night.

Separately, South Wales Police said a 53-year-old woman was killed in a fire in a house on Pensalem Road, Penlan, Swansea, at about 5:45AM GMT on Thursday.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said the cause of the Merthyr fire was unknown, while police said the blaze in Swansea - which also resulted in a 29-year-old woman being taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and a minor injury - was not thought to be deliberate.
