Two men injured in ship explosion at Limerick port

Two men aged in their 40s and 60s have been injured after a reported explosion on a ship in County Limerick in the Republic of Ireland.

It happened at Shannon Foynes Port on Tuesday shortly before 19:00, gardaí (Irish police) said.

Irish broadcaster RTÉ reported that the men were carrying out routine maintenance on the ship when the incident happened.

Emergency services, including gardaí and paramedics, attended the scene and two men were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The port was closed for a time on Tuesday night.

In a statement to RTÉ Shannon Foynes Port Company said it was being investigated by relevant authorities and the matter on board the ship "has been made safe".
