New scheme launched to make hospital safer

A new scheme to make hospitals safer has launched in Sutton Coldfield.
Led by the local neighbourhood officers from West Midlands Police, the Hospital Watch scheme aims to prevent crime and keep patients, visitors and staff safe.
Staff from Good Hope Hospital, on Rectory Road, were handed safety kits with personal alarms and purse bells at the project's launch earlier this month.
Police said the launch is the beginning of a bigger plan to roll out Hospital Watch across Birmingham, following an earlier success at Heartlands Hospital in Bordesley Green.
PC James Fern said the scheme will see officers being visible, approachable and "here to help".
He said: "It's not just about stopping crime. It's about creating a friendly and secure atmosphere.
"We want people to know we're here for them, and we won't tolerate any abuse towards our amazing hospital staff here at Good Hope or our officers."
The force asked members of the public to report anything suspicious and to remember simple things, "like locking your car and hiding valuables when you park to prevent thieves from breaking in."
Simon Jarvis, executive director at Good Hope Hospital, said patient and staff safety is "top priority".
"On-site police engagement events and heightened awareness of crime prevention are undoubtedly positive steps forward", he added.
