North Devon night bus returns for festive season
A night bus to keep communities safe in north Devon is set to return for the festive season.
Devon and Cornwall Police said following a successful summer night bus service at the weekends, police were working to keep revellers away from harm in the lead up to Christmas.
Police said the Stagecoach night bus would operate for four Saturday nights from 30 November to 21 December in Barnstaple, Bideford, and Ilfracombe.
The police force said the night bus would "help reduce drink and drug related incidents, anti-social behaviour and violence against women and girls".
'Cost effective'
Tickets for the services cost £2 for a single journey which Insp Andy Wills, who covers the Barnstaple sector, said was a "cost effective and convenient way to get home".
“Alcohol and drugs affect a person’s ability to accurately judge a situation, which can get them into trouble. Some people may be tempted to drive home after drinking but it’s not worth the risk," he said.
"The previous night bus services have demonstrated that it helps to reduce anti-social behaviour, as well as other offences.
“We would urge anyone who wants to enjoy a festive night out to use this fantastic bus service and also remind people to look out for their friends to make sure everyone has a merry Christmas and a happy and healthy new year."
'Safe place'
Insp Wills added officers were out on patrol to keep people safe and wanted to reassure the north Devon community police were there to deal with crime and listen to any concerns they may have.
Police and Crime Commissioner for Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly Alison Hernandez said everyone should get home safely whether they were "coming home from work or a night out".
“We’re committed to ensuring that North Devon is a safe place to enjoy an evening out and I hope people take full advantage of this service throughout the festive season," she said.
