York Minster will be illuminated by night for a month to try to attract more visitors to the city centre.

The free show will use 3D projection mapping on the façade of the cathedral to celebrate the "beauty" of the city's wildlife.

The York Business Improvement District (BID) are behind the event, known as Colour & Light, which is now in its third year and will run from 12 February until 12 March.

York Minster's head of events and participation Lisa Power said the inaugural display in 2023 saw the city welcome "tens of thousands of people during what is often the coldest, darkest and quietest time of the year".

She promised visitors this year would see a "spectacular display of flora and fauna".

York BID's operations manager Carl Alsop said Colour & Light, funded by the government's Shared Prosperity Fund, was "fast becoming a highlight of York's cultural calendar".

"We're particularly excited as this year's projections showcase the diversity of wildlife and unique animal stories that makes York so special.

"By encouraging families and visitors to explore the city centre during these quieter months, we're not only creating magical experiences but also supporting local businesses and reinforcing York's vibrant evening economy."

The event will run every evening from 18:00 GMT until 21:00, with projections on a 10-minute loop.

The final hour each night will be a designated "quiet hour" with reduced noise and crowd levels. No tickets are required.
