An animal charity is appealing for information after a dead puppy was found dumped in a woodland in East Yorkshire.

The dog was discovered in a wooded area near the cemetery in Priory Road, Cottingham, by a member of the public on Sunday, the RSPCA said.

The charity believe the incident to be suspicious and shared concerns for the wellbeing of other puppies from the litter.

Caitlin Houston, RSPCA animal rescue officer, said: "It must have been very upsetting for the member of the public to make this distressing discovery and we are keen to find out what happened to this dog."

Ms Houston added the body had decomposed due to the warm weather and there were no signs of ill health.

The tan-coloured puppy, which was female, was aged between 12 and 14 weeks old, a vet confirmed.

It was not microchipped so the owner is unknown, the RSPCA said.

The charity has asked for anyone who saw suspicious activity in the area to get in touch.
