Steel straps have been installed on a building near a sinkhole to allow workmen to move on with repairs, government officials have said.

Jersey's Infrastructure and Environment Department said the straps would help stabilise the building near the hole on Rouge Bouillon, which appeared after a water main burst in December between Clarendon Road and Palmyra Road in St Helier.

It said the installation would allow engineers to fit internal ties, which would be needed before work to monitor any settling or movement could take place.

A government spokesperson said the installation of the ties was expected to be finished in the coming days and work to repair the sinkhole "remained on schedule".

'Recognised the disruption'

Diversions for motorists and pedestrians have been set up around the site while the works are done.

The government said it recognised the disruption the closure had caused, but the measures were in place to ensure the safety of all road users and residents.

"The road will only reopen once the buildings are stabilised and all risks of structural collapse have been mitigated," a spokesperson added.
