Cyclist suffers life-changing injuries in crash

A man has been arrested after a cyclist suffered life-changing injuries in a crash, police have said.

Emergency services were called to Ashby Road in Hinckley, Leicestershire, at about 05:00 BST on Sunday.

Leicestershire Police said a grey Renault Trafic van and the cyclist, a man in his 40s, were travelling in the same direction when the collision happened.

A 31-year-old man, from Nuneaton in Warwickshire, was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol and causing serious injury by dangerous driving, the force added.

The cyclist was subsequently taken to hospital, where he continues to receive treatment.

Ashby Road was closed in both directions between Derby Road and Elizabeth Road for several hours, but has since reopened.

Det Con Louise Hough said: "We are asking anyone who saw the van or a cyclist in the moments before the collision to contact us.

"Any dashcam footage will also help our investigation.

"This collision has left a cyclist with serious, life-changing injuries, and we want to understand the movements of the van immediately prior to the collision."
