Disappointment over road repair cash restrictions

Potholes and other road improvements would be tackled through the funding, Worcestershire County Council said

Millions of pounds will be spent on Worcestershire's roads through new government funding with £7.9m specifically to fix potholes, the county council says.

The nearly £30m follows ministers announcing a £1.6bn budget for road maintenance to all local authorities.

Some money will be held back until councils meet certain conditions and show they are making the improvements, the authority adds.

County councillor Marc Bayliss said the restrictions were disappointing but the council had "consistently invested in this area over recent years".

"The devil is in the detail, and we'll need to review the finer points of this funding allocation," he added.

"We already repair all identified potholes in line with our policies and we plan to continue our preventative strategy, focusing on more surfacing and surface dressing to extend the life of our roads.

"Overall, while the amount is less than we'd hoped for, this is still good news."
