Work begins on foundations for new £3m market
Work has begun on a new £3m home for Brighouse Market after the former building was demolished.
Funded from Calderdale Council's £19.1 million Town Deal award, it is hoped the new site will be finished by late summer.
Cabinet member for resources, Silvia Dacre said, following the demolition of the old building, groundwork was being prepared for the new foundations.
She said people should start to see the market taking shape over the next few months.
She said: "Once complete, the transformed permanent market building will have 21 fixed stalls, each with water, drainage and power.
"There will be space to sit, rest and meet as part of an attractive and vibrant market, supporting the council's aspiration to open the market on more days of the week in the future."
The project is being delivered by Calderdale Council and the Brighouse Town Deal Board.
Dacre said the usual stallholders were continuing to trade from the nearby temporary market site on Daisy Street car park.
According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the Ship Street market was privately owned and operated on land rented from the council until 2018 when the council took over the building, which was in a state of disrepair.
Dacre said: "Feedback from traders and visitors at the temporary market has been really positive and we encourage everyone to keep supporting the traders and stall holders at the temporary site during 2025."
