Gatwick Airport says passengers can now leave liquids and electronics, such as laptops, in their cabin bags

Passengers travelling through Gatwick no longer need to remove electrical items or place liquids in plastic bags, says airport bosses.

The airport said passengers could now leave liquids and electronics, such as laptops, in their cabin bags while going through security.

It added this was part of its multi-million pound project to "transform" its security screening process by installing new computed tomography (CT) scanners.

Cyrus Dana, head of security at Gatwick, said this was a "positive change for passengers".

"More than 95% of passengers already pass through security at Gatwick in under five minutes," he added.

"As we continue to grow, our top priority is the safety of our passengers and the security of the airport.

"This cutting-edge technology ensures a safe and robust experience for our passengers."

Liquids, which include creams, gels, pastes, sprays and aerosols, can be taken through security in containers of up to 100ml in volume.

Other UK airports, including Birmingham, Bristol, London City, Luton and Southend, have already adopted this liquid rule change.

A spokesperson for Gatwick said passengers should be aware that many airports around the world have not yet introduced this new technology.

"Therefore, the one-litre clear plastic bag rule and 100ml liquid container limit may still apply when returning from other destinations," they added.
