Firefighters tackle blaze at London block of flats

A flat was "completely alight" on the 11th floor of the tower block in Walworth

About 70 firefighters are tackling a fire at a block of flats in south London.

A flat was "completely alight" on the 11th floor of the 17-storey building on Hillingdon Street in Walworth, the London Fire Brigade (LFB) said.

A spokesperson said they received the first of more than 40 calls reporting the blaze at 13:55 BST and that 10 fire engines had been deployed. A woman had left the property before they arrived.

LFB station commander Tony Perks, who is at the scene, said: "This is a very visible fire, and the area is becoming increasingly busy as a result. People are advised to avoid the area at this time, while crews damp down remaining hot spots."

The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
