Norfolk Police said they had taken the "unusual step" of launching a murder investigation without finding a body

Five people have been arrested on suspicion of murder following the disappearance of a Latvian man four months ago.

They were detained on Tuesday in King's Lynn, Norwich and Peterborough.

Maris Ile, 54, was reported missing on 23 November.

Norfolk Police said they believed Mr Ile had "come to harm" and launched a murder investigation even though his body had not been found.

The police said Mr Ile had been living in King's Lynn and working in Ely.

Det Supt Phill Gray, from the Norfolk and Suffolk Major Investigation Team, said: "Maris was a seasonal worker in the UK and had quite a structured life, keeping in regular contact with his family in Latvia.

"No-one has seen or heard from Maris since 20 November when he left his address in King's Lynn to go to work but he never arrived.

"As a result of our inquiries, we believe Maris has come to harm and have therefore taken the unusual step to launch a murder investigation, despite not having found Maris's body."

Det Supt Gray said work on this case had "involved some sensitive enquiries"

Two men were arrested in Norwich, one in Peterborough and one in King's Lynn.

A woman was also detained in King's Lynn.

Det Supt Gray said all five were in police custody and were being questioned "to understand the circumstances of [Mr Ile's] disappearance".

He added: "Our work has involved some sensitive inquiries, which is why we're only now publicly confirming the launch of this investigation."
