Police said there would be increased patrols in the Castle Gate area after the man's death

A murder investigation has begun after a man was found fatally injured in a town centre street.

Nottinghamshire Police said officers were called to Castle Gate in Newark at 23:53 BST on Wednesday after the man was found collapsed.

He was declared dead at the scene, despite the efforts of emergency services to save him, the force added.

Detectives said a 22-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of murder and was being held in custody.

'Increased police presence'

Castle Gate, Stodman Street and Middle Street remain cordoned off on Thursday morning as investigations continue.

Det Ch Insp Jennifer Lovatt said: "What happened in Newark overnight is tragic and has resulted in the death of a man.

"His family have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this extremely difficult time."

She said officers were at the scene quickly and detained the arrested man shortly after 04:00.

She added: "We understand this incident is likely to cause concern locally, but we would like to provide reassurance that we are not seeking anyone else in connection with the incident at this time.

"Officers will be carrying out additional patrols in the area and residents can expect to see an increased police presence in the area while our inquiries continue."

She urged any witnesses or anyone with relevant video footage to contact police.
