The future of a 1970s mosaic celebrating the Queen's Silver Jubilee remains undecided.

The artwork is attached to a wall which is due to be demolished as part of the redevelopment of Freshney Place in Grimsby which includes creating a new cinema.

Nearly 1,200 people have signed a petition calling for the mosaic to be preserved.

North East Lincolnshire Council said it was still considering potential options for the artwork and was in discussions with the Grimsby, Cleethorpes and District Civic Society about what happens next.

The mosaic was created in 1977 and the civic society has been campaigning to save it as it is "a symbol of our local heritage".

Secretary Sue Milsom said: "We are disappointed it hasn't been saved as there are not many pieces from this era which commemorated the Queen's Silver Jubilee. It is unique."

The council said: "The wall that the mosaic is cemented to needs to be taken down as part of the redevelopment as the area will become the entrance to the new Parkway cinema.

"The council and contractors GMI are arranging to take high resolution photographs for historical preservation and future reproduction. We are in discussion with the Civic Society about other potential options."

Ms Milsom said: "It is not clear what will happen but we are hopeful."
