HMS Diamond to be linked with Oxfordshire
A link between a Royal Navy warship and Oxfordshire will be formalised after senior county councillors approved it.
HMS Diamond, which is based in Portsmouth, is a Type 45 destroyer and has 240 sailors, including a Royal Marines boarding team.
Talks between the council, Oxfordshire's Lord Lieutenant and the Royal Navy took place last year to help establish the link to "one of the most advanced warships in the world".
The council's leader, Liz Leffman, said it "strengthens the bond and support between the Royal Navy and the local community".
All of the Navy's major ships are affiliated to parts of the UK as part of a long-standing tradition.
HMS Diamond already has a link to Coventry, while HMS Venturer, for example, is affiliated to Essex.
