The West Coast Main Line has been reopened following major disruption caused by a landslip.

Engineers worked through the night to restore the route between Carstairs and Lockerbie on Saturday morning after the incident at Beattock.

It had been closed from about 14:30 on Friday while most of southern Scotland was under a weather warning for high winds and heavy rain.

Network Rail said trains would run at a reduced speed between the destinations before further work is carried out on Saturday night.

Avanti West Coast warned passengers there may be "short-notice changes" on journeys to and from Scotland.

They said customers with tickets dated 21 February for journeys north of Preston could use them until the end of service on Saturday.

The Caledonian Sleeper said on Friday that all services would depart as scheduled, but that delays could occur during the overnight journey.

The West Coast Main Line is one of the key rail routes in the United Kingdom running between London and Glasgow with a number of branches across the country.
