An England rugby player has tried his hand as a barista, making coffees at a shop that supports people who are moving on from living in care.

Exeter Chiefs player Ethan Roots volunteered at Nellie's Coffee Bar on Gammon Walk in Barnstaple, Devon.

The shop is run by Blue Elephant Future Steps CiC, which provides additional support for young people who are leaving the care system.

Lucy Squire from the company said she was "shocked" by his barista skills.

The coffee shop aims to make positive changes for the future of young people in the area.

The visit followed the launch of the newest residential children's home in the town, which Roots attended.

The new three-bedroom home marks the company's ninth in north Devon.

In-between making coffees, Roots spent time taking selfies and signing autographs.

'Bit too busy'

Roots said he makes his own coffees but "was very slow in comparison to the girls who can do it a lot quicker than I could".

He added: "It was a bit too busy for me."

Ms Squire said she was impressed by his coffee making ability.

"I was so shocked in his barista skills, especially the coffee art he pulled out.

"We almost offered him a job straight away."
