A school was put into lockdown and three teachers injured in a reported assault by an ex-pupil.

Police were called to Newport High School on Tuesday after a former key stage three student allegedly caused damage to school property and cars as well as attacking three staff members.

Two teachers received minor injuries and the third attended hospital as a precaution, while the school instigated "emergency procedures" including a lockdown "to ensure the safety of pupils".

Gwent Police said its inquiries into the incident were ongoing.

Newport council said "it was extremely upsetting for both staff and pupils, particularly those who witnessed the incident".

It added it was aware of a rumour that a knife was involved, but added "at this stage we have no evidence that was the case and can confirm that no weapons were used".

A review is being carried out to see if any further precautions could be taken at the school.
