Two cars were in collision early on Sunday morning

Two people travelling in separate cars have died following a collision in the early hours of the morning.

Essex Police was called shortly after 03:00 GMT to the B1007 in Chelmsford, near the junction with the A12.

A man in his 30s, who was driving one of the cars, was killed while a passenger in the other car - a man in his 50s - also died at the scene.

Two other men were taken to hospital with serious injuries that were not believed to be life-changing.

Police said the victims' families had been informed and were being supported by specialist officers.

The road was expected to remain closed for investigations and police urged the public to avoid the area.

Officers appealed for witnesses or anyone who may have seen a blue BMW 3 Series in the early hours of Sunday to come forward.

Insp James Freeman said: "Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the two people who died today. We are working hard to establish what led up to this collision and would urge anyone with information to contact us."
