Two people have been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder after a man was shot dead.

Emergency services attended a home in Elm Street, in Stanley, County Durham at about 17:20 BST on Saturday following reports of a disturbance.

A 60-year-old man was declared dead at the scene.

A 37-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman are in police custody, Durham Police said.

A cordon remains in place while the investigation continues.

Det Supt Neil Fuller said: "Our officers are carrying out extensive enquiries and I am grateful for the support and co-operation we have received from the community so far.

"Our thoughts remain with the man's family at this time."

The force is urging anyone with information to come forward.
