Inside the doer-upper with starting bid of £1,000

A run-down house which needs more than a little TLC is to go up for auction in Sheffield priced from £1,000.

The shell of a home in Hinde Street lacks a few of the basic amenities - including, but not limited to, floors and internal walls - but has been described by auctioneers as an "excellent opportunity".

The four-figure starting bid is just a fraction of what homes on the street can fetch.

Mohammed Mahroof, a chartered surveyor, said: "People who generally buy at auction always see an angle, they'll refurbish it and bring it back to the greatest glory it was before, nothing ever sells for nothing."

The two-storey property, which is boarded up at the front and has exposed brickwork along the side exterior wall, lacks many of the comforts of home.

But, according to Auction House South Yorkshire, the house is "conveniently located, a stone's throw from Meadowhall, Northern General Hospital, various retail parks, and great transport links including easy access to M1".

The property, just off Page Hall Road, is also very close to Fir Vale Secondary School.

The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) indicate that the average house price in Sheffield was £220,000 in April 2025 compared to a UK average of £265,000 in the same period.

According to The Move Market website, the average house price on Hinde Street in Sheffield is £95,000.

Mr Mahroof, who has more than 30 years' experience in the industry, said despite the low price, which may shock those without knowledge of the property market and auctions, the starting sum was not that unusual.

He added: "I've seen properties advertised for a pound and some with a nil reserve though they always sell for a lot more.

"Some pieces of land that you think will never sell, landlocked from every side and people still buy them.

"People buy toilets, pumping stations, there's a market for everything in my experience of auctioneering."

Interested parties are able to bid via the Auction House South Yorkshire from Monday at 13:00 BST for about 24 hours.
