Politician proposes new dangerous driving law

A politician has proposed a new road traffic law covering hit-and-runs in Jersey.
Deputy Catherine Curtis has asked the Minister for Justice and Home Affairs to create a new offence of failing to stop and report an accident following a serious or fatal injury.
She said penalties for breaking the law should include a lifetime driving ban.
Her report said Jersey has the highest proportion of road traffic casualties in Britain, having had nine deaths and 242 serious injuries on the roads in the last five years.
In her report she said: "Driving is not a right but a privilege and justice is not served for victims left to die, or for their families, when the person responsible is allowed to drive again."
She said a lifetime driving ban was "a serious legal measure" but said it could be justified for public safety, moral responsibility, deterrence and public confidence in the justice system.
