Ms McCarthy was a past pupil at Loreto Abbey Secondary School in Dalkey.

In a statement, the school offered its sympathies to her family and friends.

A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs said it was aware of the case and was providing consular assistance.

The Spanish Civil Guard said it received notice about an "accident" on 10 January at 19:00 local time (18:00 GMT) in the climbing area known as El Chorro.

It added that a man who was also climbing at the time was unhurt.
