Student flats plan looks set to be given go-ahead

A plan for a block of flats for 247 students on a site behind Nottingham's Victoria Centre are set to be given the go-ahead.
PMI Developments and Harcourt Land and Development have applied to Nottingham City Council to clear the site, where a tyre and car product shop used to be between Rick Street and Howard Street.
Six residents have raised objections to the application on the grounds of noise, the size of the development and pressure on local services, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.
But planning officers have recommended councillors grant permission on the grounds the block would be a similar size to other new buildings in the area and the site's current building has no architectural value.
The flats, which would sit opposite the Victoria Centre car park entrance, would range in height between three and nine storeys.
It would include 37 cluster flats with 197 bedrooms around communal areas as well as 50 individual studio flats.
The officers' report says concerns have also been raised about the concentration of student accommodation in the area.
But it adds the demand for beds is high, and building flats purely for students means fewer will have to move into rental housing elsewhere in the city.
The city council's planning committee will consider the application when it meets on Wednesday.
