Drivers have been warned to expect delays while essential repairs are carried out on a North Yorkshire bridge.

Work has begun to fit a corrugated steel arch beneath Bishopthorpe Bridge, near York, and is expected to last for 12 weeks.

A weight limit has been in place on the bridge since an inspection last year found it needed strengthening.

City of York Council said off-peak lane closures would be in place along Appleton Road in Bishopthorpe, with two-way traffic lights running "at times" during the works.

The local authority said the pedestrian path and cycle route running underneath the bridge would be closed to ensure safety, with a signposted diversion put in place in both directions.

Bus routes will remain unchanged and noise levels monitored for the benefit of local residents, although the council said no night working was required.

Kate Ravilious, executive member for transport, said: "This important route is being repaired as part of our highway maintenance programme.

"Installing this new arch will mean that the weight limit can be lifted and the future of the bridge secured for the long-term.

"While we are doing all we can with our contractors, we apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused while these essential works take place."
