A 79-year-old man has been jailed for 10 years after being found guilty of sexually abusing a child.

Melvin Denton carried out the attacks on the girl between 1997 and 2000.

He was convicted of four counts of gross indecency and five indecent assaults on a girl under 14 following a trial at Grimsby Crown Court.

Denton, of Windsor Road in Cleethorpes, was also given a one-year extension on his sentence and placed on the sex offenders register for life.

Det Con Megan Sherwin thanked the woman "for her bravery in coming forward".

"Whilst the result will not take the pain and suffering away, I hope that it will provide the family some reassurance in knowing that Denton will finally face the consequences of his abhorrent actions," she said.

"Denton was a manipulative man who took advantage of an innocent young girl's trust in him, all for his own sexual gratification, over many years."
