Devon and Cornwall Police said a man in his 30s was arrested over the incident

A man has been arrested following a "suspicious incident" in an Exeter park, police have said.

Officers from Devon and Cornwall Police were called to Exhibition Fields between Exhibition Way and Beacon Heath at about 14:45 GMT on Thursday after receiving reports a man had assaulted a mother pushing her children in a pram.

The force said a man in his 30s from Exeter was arrested in connection with the incident and had been released on bail pending further inquiries.

A police spokesperson said anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the park between 13:00 GMT and 15:00 GMT on Thursday should contact investigating officers or Crimestoppers.

Det Insp Dave Ireland said there would be an "increased police presence" in the area while the investigation is conducted.

He added: "Understandably, incidents of this nature can be distressing and cause concern within the community, but fortunately, they are rare."
