Planners have backed a scheme to redevelop the airport garage

The reconfiguration of the site of a petrol station near the Isle of Man Airport to create a larger convenience store, a deli and butcher shop has been backed by planners.

The changes at the Airport Garage, on Douglas Road in Ballasalla, would also see the addition of a post office collection point, jet and car wash facilities and valeting.

The plans would see the existing structure demolished to give way for a larger building on the south east of the site to accommodate the new shops and outlets.

Welcoming the scheme, planning committee member Peter Young said it would be a "huge improvement" to the facility and have a "big benefit" for the community.

The petrol pumps would become card operated pay at pump fuelling stations under the plans.

Submitted by Mannin Retail Ltd, the planning application said the proposals were due to an expected rise in trade as a new housing estate and additional industrial units in the area become occupied.

The movement of vehicles was currently "an issue" as there were no defined entry and exit points and no defined parking spaces, it said.

The planning officer who recommended approval of the plans said the proposal enhanced the site's character and appearance, provided sufficient parking, improved access, and incorporated parking.

It would also generate 33 full-time jobs and provide for the growing population of Ballasalla, the planning officer also noted.

Representing the applicant, Val Lloyd said that the proposal would make the site more "user-friendly", and would allow the current Spar shop to expand its offering to include fresh fruit, vegetables, Manx meats and a deli with a small seating area.

However, committee member Adele Bettridge, who voted against the proposals, said taking into account other plans that have received approval, the facility would be one of four convenience stores in the area.

She argued they were more expensive, and questioned whether it would "close the door" to the potential of a supermarket in the area.

Despite the opposition, the development was approved by six votes to one.
