A group of surfers helped with the rescue of two people after they got into the sea to try and save a dog on Wednesday.

Both Penlee RNLI lifeboats went to the scene at about 17:15 BST after receiving reports the people had entered the sea close to Porthleven harbour to retrieve a dog, and subsequently got into difficulties.

By the time they arrived, the casualties were safely ashore, with one having been helped by local surfers.

An HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter also attended with the paramedic on board checking the people who did not need any medical treatment, along with another person who helped with the rescue.

Porthleven and Mullion Coastguards were also on scene.

Penlee Inshore Lifeboat was released and headed back to Newlyn arriving at 19:00 GMT, with a spokesperson saying the rescued dog was safe and well.

The RNLI advises people not to "get yourself into danger while trying to rescue a family pet from the water".
