Boy, 12, dies in fire at a Lewisham flat

A 12-year-old boy has died in a fire at a flat in Lewisham, south-east London, the Metropolitan Police has said.

Police were called to Lewisham Road at about 23:55 BST on Tuesday following a report of a fire.

Officers attended with the London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene, the Met said.

A woman, aged 54, was taken to hospital by paramedics. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.

The boy's family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

Det Ch Insp Danian Reid said: "We understand the impact this will have on the community and there will be local neighbourhood officers, and other emergency services, in the area as inquiries continue."

Officers are supporting the London Fire Brigade (LFB) in its investigation.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the LFB but is not believed to be suspicious at this stage.
