A dog attack in a field has left one sheep dead and 27 injured.

It happened between 21:00 GMT on 20 February and 13:30 the next day in Charwelton, near Daventry.

Northamptonshire Police urged dog owners to keep their pets under control and said farmers were "legally allowed to shoot a dog to prevent livestock worrying".

The force has appealed for witnesses or anyone who knows the dog owner to get in touch.

A spokesperson said: "With sheep now out in the fields with their young lambs, dog owners across the county are asked to keep their pets on a lead and under control."

A sheep died near Welford Reservoir last month after a dog attacked it, and five were killed in a similar incident in Farthinghoe, near Brackley, last year.
