Highways A30 workers dig in to build school garden
Highway workers have been digging in to build a sensory garden for pupils at a Cornwall primary school.
The workers on the £330m A30 Chiverton to Carland Cross road-dualling project helped build the calm outdoor space at Nansledan Primary School near Newquay.
The National Highways and Costain workers got together to create the garden for children with special educational needs and other pupils to enjoy.
It was funded through the National Highways social value fund, which was launched in 2022, for community projects for people living near its roads.
The A30 dual carriageway opened last year after a four-year-project.
National Highways offers staff three paid days every year to get involved in community projects.
Funding has also helped the school's environmental effort and the purchase of recycled "ghost gear" – or fishing equipment washed up on beaches - from Cornwall-based Waterhaul, for their young Eco Warriors to secure plastic-free status for a third year running.
Social value money was also used for a new motorbike for Cornwall Blood Bikes, a fly suit for Cornwall Air Ambulance, and new equipment for East Wheal Rose Football Club and the Cornwall Saracens Basketball Club.
St Allen Parish Council was given money to install a new path and replace old and broken play area equipment at Zelah.
