A new skate park would replace worn out metal ramps in a Surrey recreation ground under plans to go before councillors.

Surrey Heath Borough Council said skate ramps and BMX facilities in Crabtree Recreation Ground in Camberley were worn out and no longer cost-effective to repair.

Instead, proposals have been put forward to replace the ramps with a concrete skate park which the council said would be an upgrade to facilities and would cut maintenance costs.

Plans for the skate park will go before the council's executive on Tuesday.

A new skate park would be funded by contributions from developers for projects taking place in Surrey Heath.

Morgan Rise, Surrey Heath leisure portfolio holder, said: "This is an exciting project, reflecting our commitment to improving health and quality of life of residents, and demonstrates that we are actively listening to your needs.

"If approved, the new skate park will offer long-term benefits for families and young people alike, including providing a safe place to skate, and creating an outlet for a healthy activity for young people."

The council added that the space was well used by skaters, scooters and BMX riders, particularly those aged between 10 and 18.

A report setting out the plans said replacing the metal ramps with like-for-like equipment would mean that it would "not be as durable" as concrete.

A consultation will take place with residents to ensure the facility is accessible and suitable for as many people as possible, it said.

The council already oversees two skate parks in the area, in West End near Camberley and Mytchett near Farnborough.
