A series of overnight closures of a lifting bridge linking two quaysides in the Isle of Man's capital for maintenance works is set to begin.

The Millennium Bridge in Douglas will be closed from 20:00 to 04:30 GMT in two phases over the next two weeks.

There will be no access for pedestrians of vehicles during those times from Tuesday to Friday, and again between 10 and 13 February.

The Department of Infrastructure said work was being carried out on weeknights to "minimise the impact" on residents and road and harbour users.

The first phase of works would see teams replace one of the hydraulic cylinders, which was "integral to its lifting mechanism", the department said.

The second would be focus on the harbour flapgate, which was important for the operation of the Douglas Harbour water retention scheme, it added.
