A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a man and woman were seriously assaulted.

Devon and Cornwall Police were called to an incident in Newton Abbot, Devon, near The White Hart pub in East Street at 00:50 GMT.

The woman in her 40s and the man in his 50s were both treated at hospital for injuries officers said were not life-changing or life-threatening.

Det Insp Nicky Baker said: "We would like to reassure the public that this was an isolated incident and we believe the suspect and the victims are known to each other."

Police said the male suspect left the scene following the assault and was arrested at a nearby address on two counts of attempted murder.

The suspect remains in custody.

"We know that the incident was witnessed by a number of people and we would ask anyone who has not yet spoken with police to please get in touch," Det Insp Baker said.

"We would particularly like to speak with anyone who may have captured the incident on their mobile phones, vehicle dashcam, or on CCTV."
