The 59-bed care facility will be built on green space on Cabourne Avenue

Plans for a care home in Lincoln, which it is hoped will help resolve bed blocking in hospitals, have been approved.

The 59-bed facility will be built on green space next to the Lindum and Minster Medical Practice on Cabourne Avenue.

City of Lincoln councillors said the urgent need for elderly care made it a priority for the city.

Construction of the three-storey building is due to start within three years and proposals promise round-the-clock medical care for residents.

At a meeting on Wednesday, councillor Gary Hewson said: "We have an ageing population and there is a need for more social care.

"One of the main issues in our hospitals is bed blocking and hopefully more spaces will relieve that."

Bed blocking in hospitals occurs when people are ready for discharge but there is nowhere to go, either because there is no space in suitable care homes or the necessary help cannot be arranged at home.

Local residents had submitted several concerns about the size of the building and potential parking problems in the area.

However, the plans were passed unanimously.

Glenholme Healthcare Group is expected to contribute £21,000 to the local NHS to help meet the need created by people living at the home, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
