Libraries across East Yorkshire will host a costume swap scheme to help parents "save money" and "reduce stress" ahead of World Book Day.

Following the success of a similar scheme in 2024, families will be able to donate a costume and choose a new one.

East Riding Libraries said buying a new costume every year was damaging for the environment and added to rising costs of living for families.

Librarian Tara Foxon said: "'The costume swap scheme is the perfect opportunity for families to get involved with World Book Day and encourage a love of reading without breaking the bank.''

She added: "We know that coming up with a costume each year can not only be stressful, but carries an increasing cost too.

"We are really pleased to bring the swap back for 2025."

East Riding Libraries said, although it would host the swap scheme, it had no responsibility for the costumes but each one would be checked by staff for current EU fire safety labels.

The libraries taking part in the swap scheme are:

  • North Bridlington Library
  • Bridlington Central Library
  • Withernsea Centre
  • Haltemprice Library and Customer Services
  • Beverley Library
  • Cottingham Centre
  • Goole Library
  • Driffield Centre

The first World Book Day was celebrated in 1995. The 2025 event will take place on 6 March.
