A man who underwent surgery for prostate cancer last year is walking hundreds of miles to visit his brother who has been diagnosed with cancer.

Matt Cole is walking 251 miles (400km) from his home in Oxford to his brother's home in St Just to raise funds for three charities which have helped his family.

Mr Cole said he had seen his brother about once a year but when Jeremy was diagnosed with stage 4 oesophageal cancer and given 12 months left to live, he wanted to be there for him.

He said: "I pictured us having a simple cup of tea together, maybe even going fishing like we used to when we were young."

'Stronger together'

Mr Cole said he would be joined by family members and friends on the walk which would make it "a truly memorable and meaningful experience".

He said: "We have to try our best to make sure the whole family sticks together and works together because you're stronger together."

Mr Cole is raising money for Prostate Cancer UK which he said had been "a lifeline" for him and his father, who died from the disease.

He is also fundraising for Penny Brohn UK, a Bristol-based cancer and wellbeing charity that he said was doing "incredible work" with his brother.

The third charity he is supporting is Growing Links CIC, a charity in Penzance which provides hot meals to rough sleepers and homeless people that his sister-in-law Zoe volunteers for.

Mr Cole said: "I want to improve my physical and mental health, bring my family and friends together and show our collective support for the charities that have supported us through some of our toughest times."
