New cemetery consultation as facility nears capacity

A Nottinghamshire town council has said its current cemetery is nearing full capacity and it would need to increase council tax bills to provide a new facility.

Newark Town Council has estimated the existing cemetery in London Road will no longer have any burial space available within the next six to seven years.

It would cost an estimated £1m to provide a new cemetery, which the council says would need to be paid for by the council tax payer at a cost of £11 for those living in a band D home.

It has now stared an online consultation for residents to give their views on the issue.

On the public consultation page, the council wrote: "Unless a new Cemetery is built, this would necessitate families in Newark having to seek places to bury deceased family and friends outside of Newark.

"It may be that there is no suitable land in Newark for a cemetery and a new cemetery would need to be located outside of Newark."

Residents now have until the end of February to voice their opinions.
