Woman in critical condition after car crash

A woman is in hospital in a critical condition and a man has been arrested after a car crashed into a traffic island near Huddersfield.

West Yorkshire Police said the incident occurred on Woodhead Road, Honley, prior to the bend near to the junction with Hanging Stone Road, at about 04:52 GMT.

A 35-year-old female passenger was taken to hospital by ambulance. The driver, a 40-year-old man, received treatment for injuries not considered life threatening.

He was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving while over the prescribed limits for alcohol and drugs.

The white Volkswagen Golf GTI was travelling east towards Honley at the time of the crash. It turned over on to its roof.

Police called for anyone who witnessed the collision to contact them.
