A construction worker has died from serious injuries suffered on a building site.

The incident took place at a Rose Builders development in West Bergholt, Essex, on Monday morning.

Steven Rose, owner of the family-run firm, said he was "deeply shocked and saddened" by the death of an agency worker, who was in his 40s.

He said the company, based in Lawford, was cooperating with both police and the Health and Safety Executive.

Mr Rose said the incident was "tragic", adding his thoughts were with the man's wife and his family.

"We will look to support them as best we can at this sad and difficult time," he said.

Police and the Health and Safety Executive are investigating how the man died

Essex Police said it was called alongside fire and ambulance crews to the site in Colchester Road shortly after 11:00 BST.

The man died at the scene and his family were being supported by specialist officers, a spokeswoman said.

"We will be at the location over the coming days as our inquiries continue," she added.

Rose Builders was previously criticised by a coroner following the death of David Green, a dumper truck driver at one of its sites in Lawford.

Mr Green was crushed by the vehicle after it toppled when the ground he was driving on gave way on 3 October 2016.

An inquest found his death was an accident, but coroner Caroline Beasley-Murray said there had been a "widespread practice" of employees not wearing seatbelts.
