Crews battle wildfire at Huddersfield landmark

Firefighters spent the night at a well-known Huddersfield landmark tackling a "significant" grass fire.

Photos shared on social media showed the blaze, which spread from the foot of Castle Hill on Thursday afternoon, with thick plumes of smoke rising into the sky.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said on Friday morning six engines had been at the scene since 17:00 BST, with dampening down efforts under way.

A fire service spokesperson said: "Due to the scale and nature of the incident, a sustained fire service presence remained on scene throughout the night to continue damping down operations and ensure the fire did not reignite."

Crews were mobilised from Holmfirth, Meltham, Huddersfield, Rastrick, Slaithwaite, Dewsbury and Mirfield, they said.

Additional support included Mirfield's hose layer and support appliance, wildfire units from Slaithwaite and Holmfirth, Skelmanthorpe's welfare unit, and the drone unit.

The public were urged to avoid the area until at least 10:00 BST on Friday.
