Durham Police still operates some services from a fire station

A police chief says her force is "actively looking" for a permanent base in a town after its agreement to use space at a fire station ended.

Durham's neighbourhood and response policing teams moved to a temporary base in Aycliffe Business Park last year after leaving the fire service building on Central Avenue in Newton Aycliffe.

The force's 10-year lease with Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service ended in 2024, but it still operates some services from the station.

The county's Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Joy Allen said she on the hunt for permanent premises.

Staff are currently based at Glow, a function venue in the south of the tow.

Ms Allen said: "We've already made the commitment for a new police station as and when we find the relevant premises.

"The Glow centre will continue, but we are actively looking for a suitable location."

Meanwhile, work on a Lifeline Community Action Hub began in Newton Aycliffe last month following years of campaigning by the local neighbourhood policing team and other partners, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

The project aims to create a one-stop space in the town for anyone who needs help, advice, or support.

It will be based at the former Woolworths store on Beveridge Way.

Sergeant Andy Boyd said: "Newton Aycliffe has always been blessed with many amazing community and charity groups, but it has never had a premises that pulls them together."
