Detectives have said they are "thoroughly examining the scene" after the deaths of a man and a woman at a property in Exmouth.

Emergency services were called to the address at Briar Close at 18:30 BST on Wednesday following concern for the welfare of two people, said Devon and Cornwall Police.

Officers said a man and woman in their 60s suffered serious injuries and died at the scene.

Police said an investigation was under way "to establish the full circumstances of both deaths".

'Very sad incident'

The force said officers were not looking for anyone else in relation to the deaths.

Det Insp Neil Lloyd said there would be an increased police presence in the area and he encouraged anyone with concerns to speak to officers.

"This is a very sad incident and we are supporting the next of kin of the people who have died," he said.

"We are not seeking anyone else in relation to this incident and officers are carrying out inquiries to establish exactly what has happened.

"A cordon remains in place at the address to allow for a thorough examination of the scene and for police enquiries to continue."
