Severn Trent says it hopes to complete the repair of the water pipe on Thursday

A water company has apologised for inconveniencing drivers after two pipes burst in a city in as many days.

Residents of Matson in Gloucester awoke to find a burst pipe was spraying water 50ft into the air on Wednesday morning, which Severn Trent repaired overnight into Thursday.

But rush hour commuters on Thursday morning encountered another water main leak on the A417 Westgate Street bridge, just a short distance from where another burst happened and caused gridlock across the city last month.

Severn Trent said a two-way traffic light system is in place while its team carries out a repair, which it aims to complete on Thursday.

The right lane of the A417 Westgate Street, heading out of Gloucester and towards Over, is closed.

A spokesperson for Severn Trent told the BBC: "To keep everyone safe while we complete this repair we are working under two-way traffic lights.

"We apologise for any inconvenience and will be making this repair and getting everything back to normal as quickly and safely as possible."
